When people think of optimism, they typically associate it with someone who stays in a positive bubble. But if you look up the definition, it is hopefulness and confidence about the future or the successful outcome of something. Confidence is a key word here - that indicates it’s not a denial of the current state or the challenges and difficulties, but a determined hope that we can work towards better outcomes. That is why, although ‘resilience’ appears to have joined the group of buzzwords, at Unveiled, we believe that optimism is intricately tied to being resilient.
Big Tech is confronting one of its worst contractions in history with Meta, Google, Microsoft and Amazon all announcing mass layoffs over the span of a few months; together they have eliminated at least 51,000 jobs in recent weeks. With our inaugural member cohort experience focusing on individuals in the Tech + Product space, it is necessary to talk about layoffs and how optimism can see us through, at the same time, not losing sight of the need for consistency.
Layoffs test the power of the network like no other. Whether someone is affected by a mass layoff of a large organization or by a small reduction in a boutique firm, the impact is no different. But it doesn’t need to derail your path to cultivating authentic sponsors or your career advancement. It can instead open up an opportunity that you wouldn’t have noticed but could lead you to a brighter future.
Companies across industries continue to go through some sort of digital transformation. Open your mind to industries you had not explored before. Be intentional about looking at and tapping your network. Layoffs are not personal - stay proud of all your accomplishments and confident in the skills you have developed over the years!
